Overview
From a formal perspective, Safina Ksenia’s paintings may appear to belong to the realm of abstraction, yet this classification is not entirely accurate. Hidden within her works are concrete images—animals, plants, human figures, ancient architecture, and landscapes—which are subjected to large-scale distortion or exaggerated deconstruction. By dissolving their realistic appearances and recomposing them, she creates a new visual order.
As the artist herself has stated, what she seeks is an eternal mode of pictorial expression—a purely formal artistic language. What leaves the deepest impression on viewers are her use of color, texture, brushwork, and the structural beauty of the composition. While she emphasizes formal beauty, this beauty corresponds precisely to what Susanne K. Langer described as “significant form.”
Encountering Safina’s paintings brings to mind Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Viewers seem to become Alice herself, leaping into a rabbit hole and embarking on a magical journey of exploration—one that may lead through the vast corridors of history or into a fantastical and mysterious world. In this journey, viewers are invited to set aside personal subjectivity and preconceived frameworks, immersing themselves in the fresh sensory kingdom created by Safina.
