Overview

For many years, the Association of Galleries of the Republic of China has been committed to balancing cultural resources between northern and southern Taiwan and fostering the development of the local art industry. In 2013, it launched the inaugural Art Taichung, inviting an estimated 50 domestic and international galleries and more than 300 artists to participate. Through the compact yet vibrant format of a hotel-style art fair, the event aimed to offer audiences in central Taiwan a fresh cultural experience, while providing a platform for interaction between galleries and collectors, nurturing new art patrons, and invigorating the regional art market.

Known for his masterful use of color, Roman Nogin presented new works at this year’s Taichung Art Fair, offering a visual surprise distinct from his previous creations. With ease, he transforms diverse cultural symbols and associations through his rich palette, creating series that generate varied layers of symbolic meaning. Each canvas unfolds like a true drama—contradictory and dynamic expressions rendered in bright, rich, or pared-down tones, with compositions that alternate between density and openness. Complex yet seemingly spontaneous, his paintings immerse viewers in a compelling, magnetic charm.

Safina Ksenia, whose works resemble fantastical journeys, presents creations of remarkable richness. Departing from her previous small-scale works, she unfolds another journey through a different time and space on compact canvases, inviting viewers to experience fleeting moments seen through the artist’s eyes.

This edition also features, on a rare occasion, works by Ukrainian doll artist Li Fengjia. Her dolls may appear classical or contemporary, casual or ceremonial; from hairstyles and clothing to hats and accessories, all are crafted using distinctive materials. Each doll bears a pair of striking, deep-blue eyes, gently and innocently awaiting the viewer’s gaze. Like a soft breeze, her dolls bring a cool clarity to the heart, momentarily easing its heat. As one continues to look, it feels as though one is transported back to a time of pure innocence.
