Overview

The first time I associated Nogin’s painting to Vivaldi’s music, I was crossing a Venetian sky bridge on a dark winter night, the city enshrouded by a thick haze. I heard a street artist performing the Winter movement, and was struck by the unbelievably poetic and literary aesthetic of the moment, enhanced by the frigid night–it strongly evoked Nogin’s painting Cold Winter Sky. Vivaldi’s music is richly decorated by baroque ornamentations and delicate sentiments. Nogin’s paintings, with all their multifaceted splendor, are similar in this aspect.

The Four Seasons is a panoramic exploration of natural grandeur as the seasons run their course. The rhythmic heartbeat of the natural world is apparent in the music; the audience lives the experience of imaginary farmers, hunters, and shepherds in the shifting environment. Nogin’s paintings, meanwhile, achieve the same effect by varying the tones and shades of color to evoke the seasons. Spring enjoys a pallet of green, representing of revival and awakening. Summer is vibrant oranges and reds, expressing the passion and vitality of life at its zenith. The rich, thick golden tones of fall highlight the abundance of goods at the harvest. Finally, Nogin concludes the year with sapphire blue to illustrate the hopefulness of winter. The characters of his paintings, maiden goddesses of life with wonderful, slender figures, populate this natural backdrop.
